    Europe faces austerity

    European governments continue to cut spending to try to get debt under control. After a summer lull, protest against cuts gains pace in southern Europe. By October in Madrid, there are six demonstrations a day. Elsewhere, a lack of protest is noticeable.

    Violence erupts in Greece before austerity vote Rocks, molotov cocktails and tear gas flew through the air as protesters and police clashed in the streets of Athens, Greece. The violence erupted at the start of a 48-hour general strike against new austerity measures imposed by eurozone finance ministers that would further cut jobs and pay.
