A year of scandals
In the United States, Jerry Sandusky, a former assistant coach in Pennsylvania State’s football program, is convicted of molesting 10 boys over 15 years. The 68-year-old is sentenced to 30 to 60 years jail, and the investigation spreads to allegations of a “conspiracy of silence” among high-ranking Penn State University officials.
In Britain, deceased BBC presenter Jimmy Savile is exposed as a prolific and predatory child abuser. The BBC is accused of killing an investigation that would have exposed him. The police investigation widens to include other public figures.
In November, CIA Director David Petraeus, commander of both Afghanistan and Iraq wars, is forced to resign after evidence of an affair with his female biographer. The scandal widens to snare General John Allen, the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan.
